Development and practical application of CO2 separation membrane and system that have both high performance and practicality

TOYOBO CO., LTD.

Outline

By utilizing our company’s polymer membrane technique, we are going to try to develop a membrane and a system to separate carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N2) discharged from thermal power plants.
The membrane technique for CO2 separation mainly uses either a polymer membrane or an inorganic membrane. In terms of cost performance, the polymer membrane is highly expected to be put into practical use. We have a large number of membrane separation techniques, knowledge, and products that utilize the polymer membrane techniques, including medical membrane for hemodialysis, water treatment membrane for seawater desalination, and wine filtration membrane. Quite a high performance is expected for a gas separation membrane which separates carbon dioxide, nitrogen and other gases discharged from the plants. By working actively with other organizations (for joint research and development, and product commercialization), we aim to realize a membrane and a system for CO2 separation that have high performance and cost efficiency, and can be widely adopted in the industrial world.

Description

1. Achievement target for the challenge
• Development and practical application of CO2 separation membrane and system that have both high performance and practicality

2. Issues to be solved to overcome the challenge
• Performance enhancement and practical utilization of membrane, as well as cost efficiency for product commercialization
Example: Separation selectivity (separation factor of 100 or higher), long-term stability, chemical resistance, heat resistance, pressure resistance

3. Our concrete actions
• Searching for collaboration partners
(Collaboration plan)
Universities, etc.: Technical development of a basic membrane
TOYOBO: Modularization, mass production technique development for the membrane, and performance evaluation
Plant manufacturer, etc.: System development, equipment design, etc.
• After determination of collaboration partners, our company will get engaged in our role described above.

4. Effects when the challenge is overcome
• Contribution to improvement of efficiency in separation and recovery of CO2 gas (CO2/N2 separation) discharged from thermal power plants

Partner(s)

(Offers for collaboration) University, venture company, plant manufacturer, etc.
