The development of higher seawater concentration by the new hollow RO membrane

TOYOBO CO., LTD.

Outline

In the Middle East area, our hollow fiber type reverse osmosis membrane (RO membrane) has been used since the 1980s in seawater desalination plants that produce drinking water from seawater. Fresh water produced by hollow fiber type membranes in the area is approximately 1.6M tons per day, which is equivalent to the amount used by 6.4 million people.

We have just developed a new RO membrane and started demonstration experiments in several areas. Since this new membrane can treat seawater with higher concentration compared with the conventional RO membranes, concentrated seawater discharged from plants can be reused. Thus, it is expected that water production amount is increased and that valuable substances can be collected. In addition, if applied to ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge) process of wastewater treatment, it can contribute to 20% or larger amount of electric power/energy saving compared with the conventional evaporation or electrodialysis methods, which leads to CO2 emission.

Description

1. Achievement target for the challenge
• Launch of plant for desalination from concentrated seawater (water production amount increase in existing plants)
• Launch of plant for valuable substance collection from concentrated seawater (20% electric power consumption reduction compared with electrodialysis method)
• Launch of wastewater ZLD (zero wastewater) plant (20% energy consumption reduction compared with evaporation method)

2. Issues to be solved to overcome the challenge
• Development of system that incorporates pretreatment and posttreatment technique

3. Our concrete actions
• Performance improvement of new hollow fiber RO membrane

4. Quantitative effects when the challenge is overcome
• Not applicable, due to uncertainly of project schedule
