Carbonate production(New technology development on CO2 fixation and utilization)

Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd.

Outline

Utilizing industrial wastes that contain a lot of calcium and magnesium, we fix CO2 emitted from thermal power plants and factories as carbonates, and are developing new technologies to use them as resources.
Specifically, in addition to developing innovative technologies at the CCSU Study Group (details will be described later), joint research with the Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL) was conducted to investigate promising technologies overseas, and to consider application to Japan.
In addition, we will set up a forum for information exchange on carbonate application development with JCOAL.

Description

1.CCSU Study Group
Idemitsu and Ube Industries, Ltd. and JGC Global Co., Ltd. established a CCSU study group on carbon dioxide capture and storage with Utilization in 2019.
This research group is developing a new technology of "utilizing industrial wastes containing a large amount of calcium, etc., and reacting it with carbon dioxide for carbonation and high added value." Furthermore, we aim to utilize the residuals after extraction of carbonates and metal ions as resources for building and civil engineering materials, various industrial materials.

The technical development contents are as follows.
・Development of elemental technologies for higher efficiency
・Scale-up
・LCA evaluation, CO2 fixation cost evaluation
・Examine use of carbonates and by-products

The schedule is to establish basic technologies in 2020-22.
After that, it decides to scale up.
After considering the bench in 2023-24, it decides to commercialize.
Aim for commercialization after semi-commercial operation in 2025-30.

2. Overseas technology survey
A joint study with JCOAL to install a pilot device using CO2 fixation technology developed by Columbia University in the United States at the Dry Fork coal-fired power plant in Wyoming Implemented as technical cooperation.

This technology is a method for easily extracting calcium, magnesium, etc., bound to the matrix of minerals and steel slag using various catalysts, and is economically superior because it can produce various inorganic materials as by-products. .

The technology will be evaluated in three years, and if it is a superior technology, it will be applied to thermal power plants in Japan in the future.
Future schedule is to demonstrate tests in the United States during 2020-22. The application will be examined in Japan in 2023-24, and the installation will be aimed at the actual machine in 2025-2030.

3. Establishment of a place to exchange information on the use of carbonates
We are considering setting up a“carbonate committee ”within JCOAL.
Specifically, we will exchange opinions with the participation of member companies and others under the theme of “Study on uses of manufactured carbonates”.
Establishment is scheduled for April 2020.
