Contribution to a carbon-free society in the development and production activities of automobile parts

TOYODA GOSEI CO.,LTD.

Outline

The Toyoda Gosei Group is a global company that provides customers around the world with safety, reassurance and comfort through our products - mainly rubber and plastic automotive components made from polymers - based on our management philosophy ‘Boundless Creativity and Social Contribution’.

We have announced our commitment to minimize CO₂ emissions in the long-term vision ‘TG2050 Environmental Challenge’ and will continue to contribute to building a net zero carbon society by producing eco-friendly processes as well as products, reducing environmental impact at all stages of the life cycle of our products, and actively embracing renewable energy.

Description

In February 2016, the Toyoda Gosei Group announced its long- term vison ‘TG2050 Environmental Challenge’, comprises six challenges that it plans to have in effect by 2050. The challenges are 1. Contribution to an environmentally-friendly society through high polymer and LED technology. 2. Contribution to building a low carbon society. 3. Contribution to building a recycling- based society (Waste). 4. Contribution to building a recycling- based society (Water). 5. Environmental preservation and building a society in harmony with nature. 6. Environmental management (Fostering environmentally responsible employees and corporate culture). The Toyoda Gosei Group is committed to global environmental actions under the slogan ‘A Greener World for Our Future and Children’.

For the ‘Challenge Zero’ activities, we are going to explain further 1. Contribution to an environmentally-friendly society through high polymer and LED technology and 2. Contribution to building a net zero carbon society as they are the actions we have taken to address climate change that the world is paying more attention to due to the frequent occurrence of natural disasters.

Challenge ①

" Contribution to an environmentally-friendly society through high polymer and LED technology."

~Developing/Providing products that contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions ~

  • Providing electric vehicle components

We are developing/producing hydrogen fuel tanks for hydrogen fuel cell cars.

  • Developing lightweight plastic/rubber parts that improve vehicle’s performance and fuel efficiency.

We have reduced the weight of 50% of our products by changing fuel filler pipes from metal pipes to plastic ones. We are working to reduce the weight of all our products.

  • Developing energy efficient products

We are developing/producing energy efficient products such as LED lights, power devices etc.

< Next step >

The demand for environmentally-friendly electric vehicles such as EV, FCV continues to grow. Therefore, we will continue to develop materials, reduce development costs of manufacturing process, switch fuels and reduce the weight of products working with automobile manufacturers, material manufacturers and research organizations etc.

Challenge ②

" Contribution to building a net zero carbon society "

~Minimizing CO₂ emissions from our manufacturing processes and increasing the use of renewable energy~

  • Promoting energy efficiency by completely stop wasting time/things etc. (Muda)

We are improving daily routines, and also our energy saving team, called TG-ESCO, established to improve energy efficiency at the plants, are identifying energy losses.

  • Developing energy efficient processes by improving engineering.

We are encouraging the development of energy efficient processes by visualizing energy consumption, identifying waste in processes (Muda) and improving fundamental processes.

  • Switching to green energy

We are encouraging green energy, switching from heavy fuel oil with high environmental impact to diesel or LNG etc. with low environmental impact. In addition, we are working to achieve 20% renewable energy across our global operations by 2030.

< Next step >

A large amount of CO₂ emissions has been emitted from the manufacturing processes. Therefore, we will continue to develop innovative production engineering, uses energy more efficiently, by using IoT, in collaboration with research organizations, and also to increase the use of renewable energy.
