Reducing CO2 emissions by expanding the ratio of recycled material at smelting sites.

JX Nippon Mining & Metals Corporation

Physical Separation Process for Increasing the ratio of recycled materials

Outline

Leverage a recycling businesses that use a metal smelting process to reduce CO2 emissions in copper production by expanding the ratio of recycled materialat smelting sites.

Description

・ The current ratio of recycled material in the Company’s copper smelting site is about 10%. By increasing this rate in the future, the Company aims to reduce CO2 emissions in copper production compared to production from ore.

・ The technical challenges to achieve this goal are to identify the impurities that recycled materialsbring into the smelting process, verify their effects on the smelting process, and actually process them. Accordingly, with initial operation scheduled for 2022, the Company plans to invest in equipment to increase the collection of the recycled material, which it will use to identify and confirm the technical challenges, and consider further expansion plans.

2020 to 2023 Demonstration and understanding of issues
2024 to 2050 Expand processing capacity in stages

Other Innovation Challenges

Contribute to securing metal resources for lithium-ion batteries (LiB) and accelerating the widespread use of electrical vehicles through the development of recycling technology for LiB used in automobiles.
