Reduction of CO2 emissions by biogas from vegetable waste and sludge

FUJI OIL HOLDINGS INC.

Outline

At present, vegetable waste and sludge discharged from our company are collected by waste disposal companies. We extract biogas (methane gas) from those wastes, and use as fuel for cogeneration facilities etc... We generate electricity and heat energy as renewable energy, and use it in our production activities to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, by reducing the amount of waste, we contribute to reducing CO2 emissions associated with waste disposal.

Description

① Target in challenge
We reduce CO2 emissions and also waste. We verify the effect on investment and promote it at group companies in Japan. If it success in Japan without any problems, we consider expanding it to overseas group companies.

② Challenges to be overcome
The physical properties of the generated gas differ depending on the type of waste, so it is necessary to determine the characteristics. At first, with the cooperation of the manufacturer, biogas is actually generated on a lab scale and examined. We check appropriate as fuel and combustion efficiency. If there are any issues, we consider countermeasures, and if it is judged that there is no problem, we install small-scale equipment and verify them in actual operation. In addition, even if there is no technical problem, it is considered that one of the issues is whether the effect on the investment can be obtained. We want to think about use of subsidies positively. On the other hand, when we install equipment, it is necessary to investigate whether it can comply with the laws (installation standards) of each region and country or not.
