Introduction of renewable energy for production of beverages and alcoholic beverages with zero CO2 emissions

Suntory Holding Limited

Outline

The Suntory Group, a comprehensive alcoholic beverage and soft drinks company, has stated in its Environmental Vision 2050, "Contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society to prevent global warming". Suntory will also reduce CO2 emissions from the production of alcoholic and beverages to a net zero through the active introduction of renewable energy.
Specifically, we will strongly promote the following measures.
A) Introduction of renewable energy sources such as solar power
B) Use of locally produced and locally consumed biomass fuel
C) Procurement of renewable energy power

Furthermore, in the alcoholic beverage and soft drinks manufacturing processes, we will also make maximum use of energy conservation measures, such as a radical review of the use of heat and electricity.
In addition, by applying these measures to existing plants and future new plants, we will contribute significantly to realizing a decarbonized society.

Description

The Suntory Group, a comprehensive alcoholic & beverage company, recognizes that the global environment itself is an important management base, and has set the "Environmental Vision 2050" to "Contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society". We set high targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 25% in Scope 1 and 2 in 2030 compared with the year of 2015 as the base year.
Conventionally, in addition to energy saving activities and improvement of the manufacturing process, we have reduced CO2 emissions by changing fuels from heavy oil to natural gas or city gas. In addition, we have been promoting the introduction of renewable energy, such as installing solar power generation plant which is about 500 kW in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, and using biogas generated by anaerobic wastewater treatment of factory wastewater at beer factories as power generation fuel and heat source.
To achieve the 2030 target and contribute to a decarbonized society by the year of 2050, the Suntory Group will proactively introduce renewable energy into the process of alcoholic and beverage production.

First, the Suntory Kita Alps Shinano-no-Mori Water Plant, which is scheduled to start operation in the year of 2021, aims to achieve a zero-CO2 emission plant. To that end, we will promote the following measures.

A) Introduction of renewable energy sources such as solar power
→ Exploring renewable energy suitable for each region and aiming to utilize it for factory power.

B) Use of locally produced and locally consumed biomass fuel
→ Planning to use timber from forest-thinning by forest maintenance and biomass from nearby business sites for heat sources used in factories.

C) Procurement of renewable energy power
→ Procuring base load power sources such as hydropower and biomass power generation, and aiming to operate factories with 100% renewable energy electricity, in addition to the introduction of renewable energy power generation that is optimized depending on time and weather,

Furthermore, in the manufacturing process of the Suntory Group's existing factories, we are conducting a thorough review of the use of heat and electricity, so that we can maximize our knowledge and experience of energy saving in alcoholic beverage and soft drinks production to maximize Suntory's natural resources. It is utilized in the design and construction of production and manufacturing processes at Suntory Kita Alps Shinano-no-Mori Water Plant. Operation of energy-saving methods and introduction of energy-saving equipment are being carried out to the fullest.
By combining such ultimate energy-saving design and aggressive procurement of renewable energy, we can achieve CO2 zero emissions from Suntory Kita Alps Shinano-no-Mori Water Plant.
In addition, we will contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society in Japan and the world by applying the design philosophy and concrete measures of the plant to future new plants.
