Investment in and Joint Development with UK’s Carbon Clean Solutions Ltd. ~Entering into the Development of Carbon Capture, Utilization Projects~

Marubeni Corporation

Outline

Marubeni invested in and formed business alliance with Carbon Clean Solutions Ltd. (hereinafter, “CCSL”) a United Kingdom based company that develops and owns the technology to capture carbon dioxide (hereinafter, “CO2”) from the flue gas emitted by coal/gas fired power plants and industrial plants. With this investment, jointly with CCSL, Marubeni will begin to develop projects that reuse/store CO2 or convert it into other valuable products.

CCSL has technologies that enable CO2 to be captured more efficiently, with which Marubeni will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.

Description

Marubeni invested in and formed business alliance with Carbon Clean Solutions Ltd. (hereinafter, “CCSL”) a United Kingdom based company that develops and owns the technology to capture CO2 from the flue gas emitted by coal/gas fired power plants and industrial plants. With this investment, jointly with CCSL, Marubeni will begin to develop projects that reuse/store CO2 or convert it into other valuable products toward the following goals.

・Contribution to decarbonization of a wide range of industries and customers

・Creating a new business model in the new business domain of using and recycling CO2.

Challenges to achieve these goals include financial support of governments such as incentives to reduce CO2 as well as further reduction of recovery costs through technical improvement.

CCSL has developed technology of the solvent used in the chemical absorption method, one of the CO2 separation and capture technologies, which makes CO2 capture more efficiently and at lower cost than other existing technologies.

In addition, CCSL has also designed and supplied CO2 capture equipment to fit the unique characteristics of its own solvent. The cost of the capturing with combination of CCSL’s solvent and equipment achieves the lowest in the world compared to that of the other technologies which have been commercialized to date.

Furthermore, CCSL has also begun to develop a new generation technology that will enable even further cost reduction.

In concert with the rising importance of tackling climate change issues resulting from global warming, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has also become an urgent issue.

Under these circumstances, reduction of the CO2 emissions from the hard-to-abate industries such as steel, cement, petrochemical and energy from waste by reusing/recycling CO2 is expected to be one of the most viable and practical solutions of global warming, together with Carbon Capture, Storage (CCS) businesses.
